Therapists and Hygienists Working in the Public Sector Moving to the Professional Stream
Update on Progress
                                                                                      updated 6/9/2010

This has been an issue considered relevant to therapits for several years and one we have worked on in conjucnction with the PSA.
While there was a sucessful reclassificaton of therapists in 2009 this did not include movement to the professional Stream and the PSA made a commitment to continue working on this issue.

Below is a copy of part of an email sent by the PSA to Therapists who are members of the association as an update to this issue to and the attachments mentioned to keep our members informed of the progress being made on this issue.

Subject: Attention All Dental Therapists, Dental Hygienists re AHP Stream
Dear All
I am writing to you just to keep you in the loop of what the PSA is doing to assist Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists. When the PSA was successful in gaining reclassification for Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists last year and a peer assessment from OPS4 to OPS5, I made a promise to you all that I would pursue the Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists into the Professional Stream. The aim of gaining the reclassification up to OPS5 was to ensure you were above the PO1 range for increments.

As promised, I am attaching the letter that I have recently posted to the Department of Health to commence discussions with the Department to ensure all Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists are translated into the Professional Stream and then when the new Enterprise Agreement discussions commence in late 2011, have them translated to the Allied Health Professional Stream.

I understand some people feel a long delay and not happy, but there is a process that must take place and we have taken the first steps by your successful reclassification and now the next step is for recognition.
I assure you that I will serve you to my utmost ability.

I have also taken the liberty of attaching a membership form for those Dental Therapists and Dental Hygienists who are not members. Remember the bigger the voice the stronger the support and would be very happy for you to join the PSA.

Please feel free to email me if any queries or comments.

regards
Margie Lindley

Draft response to the consultation paper from the Dental Board of Australia on
'Registration Standards and Related Matters'                                            dated 3rd December 2009

In late October the newly formed Dental Board of Australia released a consultation paper on 'Registration Standards and Related Matters' asking all relevant stakeholders to provide comment / feedback on several issues ranging from national registration requirements, scope of practice for all dental operators, continuing professional development needs and recency of practice requirements, among several others. It was critical that the SADTA and ADOHTA were involved in this consultation process to ensure that fair representation would be given to dental therapists and oral health therapists alike.

A decade ago, dental therapists would not have even had the opportunity to be invovled in such consultation. Today however, the forum seems to be open giving dental therapists every opportunity to direct our own destiny rather than having this dictated to us.

Below are links to the latest draft response from the ADOHTA and the formalised response from the SADTA. Any comments members would like to make can be directed to Tracey Hood or the executive committee.

Let's cross our fingers that the new Dental Board of Australia takes several of the comments raised by ADOHTA and SADTA into account when formulating any new codes of practice, legislation or national dental acts.
