SADTA and NTDTA Amalgamation                                                               updated 13/7/2011

Some members may have already noticed some of the small changes that have occured with reference to our title and our executive team. At the last AGM in May 2011 during our Biennial Conference, it was motioned and supported by the majority of our members that our association amalgamates with the Northern Territory Dental Therapists' Association. This is a significant move that will now see our association provide support for therapists working across nearly one third of this entire country - some working in some of the most remote communities and centres in all of Australia.

Please join us in welcoming our newest members from the Northern Territory!

The other significant change was around our official title in readiness for our constitutional and structural changes about to occur in late August / early September 2011: changes that will see us become a sub branch of ADOHTA - the Australian Dental & Oral Health Therapists' Association.

This too was motioned and overwhelmingly supported at the last AGM which will see our association now known as the
ADOHTA SA/NT Branch, completely supported by our federal colleagues and ADOHTA executive.

So with some sadness we say goodbye to SADTA Inc. and welcome ADOHTA SA/NT Branch. This is truly an exciting move forward as an association of professionals who practice dental and oral health therapy. ADOHTA is now one of the peak professional bodies across the profession and has positioned itself as an industry liaison and advocate for primary preventive and holistic oral health care for all Australians.

The executive committee hopes that this change in direction for the association with lead to greater support and recognition for dental and oral health therapists practising in South Australia and the Nothern Territory. Thank you to all who have been welcoming of the changes  - we look forward to what the future holds.

Scope of Practice Survey - A chance to have your say                              updated 20/5/2011
Health Workforce Australia has been asked by the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council to advise them on some aspects of the dental and oral health workforce.

The survey we are conducting as part of this project will run from 11 May through to 6 June 2011. The purpose of the survey is to ask you to share your experience of dental services so that we can present information to the Health Ministers' council, allowing them to consider the future scope of practice for dental hygienists, dental therapists and oral health therapists. The survey will involve sharing a story followed by a few short questions and should only take about ten minutes or so to complete depending on how much you want to write.

Particpating in this survey will contribute to this important review of scope of practice for dental therapists and oral health therapists and dental hygienists.

Please encourage as many friends or colleagues as possible to contribute their story to the survey. We will be sending out postcards and emailing invitations over the next few days.

You can go directly to the survey by connecting to this link

A Sad Day for the Future of Oral Health Training in Queensland  dated 30th September 2010

Griffith University has announced that it will be withdrawing it's Bachelor of Oral Health course from 2011. The Head of the Dental School at Griffith citing difficulties in sourcing clinical placements for both programs (BDS and BOH), risks related to the potential loss of program accreditation and increasing competition from other universities, as the main reaons for pulling the program.

This is indeed a concern in any situation where the wants and needs of dental surgery programs are favoured over those of the primary and allied health care givers produced in oral health programs.

We also should acknowledge an outstanding achievement from one of our current Bachelor of Dental Surgery students Isobel Holmes, who is originally a dental therapist who has gone on to study dentistry. She won two awards for 3rd year BDS which is a wonderful achievement for her and proof that dental therapists are certainly not any less capable of clinical and/or intellectual excellence than our dental students / dentists. The awards she won were as follows:

  1. The Health Partners Prize For Dental & Health Science 3:  Awarded to a third year student in recognition of them having achieved outstanding academic results in the Dental & Health Science stream in the Third Annual Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery.
  2. The Wilsen Prize For Ethical Conduct:  The 3rd Year Coordinator in consultation with the 2nd Year Coordinator shall award the prize to a third year Bachelor of Dental Surgery student who has demonstrated sound ethical conduct throughout the first three years of the program and has submitted a 1500 word essay stressing why ethical conduct is important.

Well done to all of the above mentioned prize winners and indeed everyone who achieve excellence in the chosen discipline in both courses over the last 12 months.

New national Dental Board of Australia website - online now

dated 4rd December 2009

Online now is the new national Dental Board of Australia's website. Content available here ranges from descriptions of the function of the board, links to notes from board meetings, access to consultation papers and contact information. At present you can find electronic versions of the all of the responses received during the consultation period surrounding the release of the DBA's National Registraion Standards and Related Matters paper. Making the content of the responses public makes for a very open consultation process and I would encourage all SADTA members and dental & oral health therapists around the state to familiarise themselves with the debate by having a read of some of the responses.

Visit: www.dentalboard.gov.au/submissions.html for downloadable copies of each submission.

A link to AHPRA is also available, which is an acronym for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. Ten health professions will be governed under the one major national health authority as of July 2010, consisting of chiropractors, dental care practitioners, medical practitioners, nurses and midwives, optometrists, osteopaths; pharmacists, physiotherapists, podiatrists and psychologists.

The following is a desciption of the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme provided by AHPRA:

"The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme for the Health Professions consists of a Ministerial Council, an independent Australian Health Workforce Advisory Council, a national agency with an Agency Management Committee, national profession-specific boards, committees of the boards, a national office to support the operations of the scheme, and at least one local presence in each State and Territory."

National Dental Board Appointments

dated 3rd December 2009

Are you up to date with what is happening in terms of the formulation of the National Dental Board and National Registration - due to be in effect from July 2010? The following communique from the Australian Health Workforce Ministerial Council (made up of Health Ministers from around Australia) offers insight into the selection and appointment of executive council members to the newly formed National Dental Board of Australia.

The SADTA feels that the composition of the board is terribly top heavy with dentists and those representing the private sector and that fair and equal representation of all stakeholders has not been achieved. Particularly with the recent change of the number of dentists on the board from three to five. The SADTA congratuates Mrs Jenny Bishop to the position of practitioner member (dental therapist) and wishes her all the best for what will be challenging times ahead no doubt. Let's hope Jenny is able to succeed in helping to drive our profession forward from this post.

The National Health & Hospitals Reform Commission                                                  dated 29th July 2009

Something of interest. The NHHRC has presented to Nicola Roxon, Federal Minister for Health, their final report detailing over one hundred recommendations for consideration in reforming Australia's Health Care System. The report was released on Monday the 27th of July. you may have heard Kevin Rudd in the media earlier this week confirming that the Federal Government had received this report and will now begin a phase of considering (and hopefully starting to implement) the reports recommendations. As you can see, dental health is finally starting to be recognised as being a part of the big picture in terms of it's association with overall general health. It is important for us to know that the federal goverment has been made aware of the fact that the costs of dental care are simply out of reach for some (I had a father in the clinic just last week who needs routine dental care but is sacrificing his own care so that his four children receive the health care they need) and that the caries rates in children are increasing once again (as we all have observed).

In the summary the following concerning dentistry:

"Improved access to dental health care"

Improving access to dental health care is our fourth key priority for improving access and equity.

Nearly one third of all Australian adults avoid or delay visiting the dentist due to costs; there are more than 650,000 people on public dental waiting lists; and the dental health of our children is worsening.

To address these problems, we are recommending a new universal scheme for access to basic dental services - 'Denticare Australia'. Under Denticare Australia, everyone would have the choice of getting basic dental services - prevention, restoration, and the provision of dentures - paid for by Denticare through either a private health insurance plan or through public dental services.

We are also recommending internships for graduating dentists and oral health professionals to provide broader clinical experience and training, as well as to expand the public dental workforce.

To improve the dental health of Australia's children we are recommending the national expansion of preschool and school dental programs."
